Indoor lighting may serve a simple purpose at its core - to illuminate a certain area when outdoor lighting is not sufficient - but it also can serve a secondary purpose, which is to put the focus on a certain item in the room, such as a chair, or a painting that is hung on the wall. It can also hang above an often-used area of a room, such as the sink or the countertop, and not only light that area for productivity, but also for dramatic effect.
Here are a few other tips for lighting your indoor areas.
Lighting the living room. A neat effect that some like to add to their living rooms is to have a dim, hanging light placed above each available seat. This puts the focus on the living room as a place people can sit down and talk, and also adds some aid for those who want to read.
Illuminating the kitchen. Low-lighting works really well in areas above the sink, as well as underneath cabinets. You can even add some lighting to the interiors of cabinets, as well.
Brightening the bathroom. There are two types of lighting that interior designers recommend for bathrooms. Around a bathroom mirror, sconces are great lighting choices, as they give you a good look at yourself during your morning routine when putting makeup on or brushing your teeth. An overhead light can help light up the rest of the bathroom, which is important for cleaning.

Three Different Types of Lighting
When it comes to lighting, there are a few different types you can use to accomplish the particular look you're going for. Each has its own advantage, and when used in the proper way, can add quite a bit to your home's decor.
Ambient lighting. This type of lighting illuminates a large area with a nice amount of brightness, but not too much brightness. Also called general lighting, ambient lighting is often seen in chandeliers and mounted light fixtures.
Accent lighting. If you have certain items in a room you want to draw attention to, such as paintings, sculptures, trophies, accent lighting is the type of lighting you'd use to pull that off. This lighting projects as much as three times the light that surrounds it on the item you're trying to draw attention to.
Task lighting. This is lighting with a purpose. You'll find task lighting in undercabinet areas, on desks, hanging over reading chairs, and around bathroom mirrors. If you have something you need to get done, it's probably done under task lighting.

Home Lighting Tips
A big part of design and decorating is the lighting that is chosen to provide illumination to a given area of the home. There are a few tips you can take advantage of if you want to make the most of your lighting.

Lay out goals. Do you want ambient lighting? Indirect lighting? Bright light? Soft light? This is something you need to figure out before you go out and actually make your purchase.
Remember the outdoors. You may be tempted to concentrate on your interior lighting, but the lighting of your home's exterior is just as important. It makes your landscape visible at night and can also provide security.
Night lights are lights, too. Do you have small children? If so, you may need to purchase night lights to place in their rooms and in hallways so that they can find their way around in the middle of the night. You can buy night lights that match your decor, as well, so factor that into your search.

What Are "Rated Wet" Fans?
As part of our 20% off all ceiling fans promotion this
month, The Light House is
offering rated-wet/wet-rated ceiling fans at this discount.
You might be asking, "What are rated-wet ceiling fans?"
There are damp-rated and wet-rated fans. These ratings are given to fans by the
Underwriters Laboratory (UL). The difference in the two is as such:
-
Damp-Rated Fans: These are fans that should be placed
in a bathroom or other humid locations.
-
Wet-Rated Fans: If you want to put your fan on a patio,
front porch or other area where it may come into direct contact with water,
look for fans with a "wet" rating. Wet-rated fans include attributes
like sealed (moisture resistant) motors, rust-resistant housing casing,
stainless steel hardware and all-weather blades.
If you need help locating a damp or wet-rated ceiling fan,
